Learning on the Go
Did you read the last post about books and immediately blackout in a fit of rage? Did you think, “What the living dilly fuck is she doing recommending BOOKS??? TO READ?!?!?” (Then you ripped off your shirt while catapulting a tiny hamster out your window while simultaneously chugging an entire magnum of whipped cream flavored vodka?) If you aren’t a book person or are running around super busy, try podcasts you maniacs! Put that hamster down and buy better vodka please. You may not be a bibliophile and that’s cool, but what’s not cool is being an IDIOT. Know what’s going on in the world around you. Listen to other people’s stories and perspectives. It’s good for you. And the best part, often it’ll take you out of your own head and will help you to start thinking smarter with a bigger picture mentality. BE WORLDLY ASSHOLES!!!
Do I sometimes cry in the gym while listening to mah stories? Yes. Have I tripped on the treadmill more than once because I was laughing so hard at something David Sedaris said? Double yes. Do I care what people think when they see an insane woman laughing and crying alone in the grocery store? Hell no. Did my boyfriend refuse to come to my apartment after I listened to Serial late at night even though he told me not to cause I get scared but I did it anyway and then begged for forgiveness and safety but had to sleep with the lights on alone because he was teaching me a lesson about boundaries and being a goddamn adult??? These are my favorites.
THIS AMERICAN LIFE. This is Podcast 101. You guys, Ira Glass is a God amongst mere mortals. Each week has a theme and they tell stories from the mundane to the magical. Listen in weiners.
GOOD LIFE PROJECT. Each week our sweet hosts talks to someone who has gotten closer to figuring out the best ways to live a good life. Often it’s not what you’d expect.
TED TALKS. Podcast TedTalks?!?!? Freaking genius ideas and inspiration on the go?!?!?!? Most talks are 5-20 minutes long so you can easily squeeze them into your hectic day. You just might have something interesting to talk about while you wait for your coffee. (or drugs).
RADIOLAB. These guys are hilarious and super smart. Ever wonder how you would get a library card if you grew up in a cult and didn’t have any proof of existence like a birth certificate or social security card? What would you do if you were a doctor and all the generators died? Who would you save? Would you save me?!? I give great foot massages. They tackle tough fascinating questions on the regular. ON THE REG!!!!
INVISIBILIA. Chicks! Chicks! Chicks! Lady badasses who tackle the strange topics of invisible forces that control human behavior? I’d like seconds please! This podcast is fascinating and they whisper the title to you every time like its a magical secret.
REVISIONIST HISTORY. Ever get schooled by someone who read all of Malcolm Gladwell’s books? Did you think I’d like to punch this know-it-all in the face? Well now you can get his wit and penchant for human behavior statistics while you drive your car or go for a run! (And possibly get yourself punched in the face you smarty!!) He is insanely brilliant and a fucking delight!!!
SERIAL. Did you freaking love How to Make a Murderer? or The Jinx? Are you planning on murdering someone and then framing someone else? Did they do it?!!? Season One is spectacular and creepy. (Special shoutout to my boo for not breaking up with me during this emotional time in my life. It consumed me. I WAS a member of the jury in my living room!!!) Listen during the day. If you’re not a total pussy like me, I grant you through the grace of bravery to listen at night. (It’s not scary. I am a pathetic weakling).
What are your favorite Podcasts? Do they discover humor? Death? How to make the best homemade fruit roll up? I’d love to know.
Gettin’ learned on the go, Julia
