Dieting vs. Detoxing
Food, food, oh glorious food how we love you! You bring us such delight but then comes the shame and slumpy feelings. It doesn’t have to be that way peeps life is all about balance. This post is about FEELING good. So I pose the question, DO YOU NEED TO DETOX? The answers may surprise you. Detoxing is not about weight loss but rather nutritional rebalancing. Your stomach wants to zen out too my friends!!! Toxins are anything your body cannot use as energy. If you suffer from bloating, anger issues, brain fog, poor sleep, indigestion, muscle or joint pain, anxiety, acne, headaches, allergies, depression…..the list goes on…you could use a nice cleanse of the system. Detoxing, as you are soon to see is for everyone.
WHY? WHY? WHY?!?!?!? Imagine if you never got an oil change for your car….the same goes for your body. It runs on what you feed it, so treat it to a nice cleaning every now and then. (PS, if you haven’t had an oil change in a while, let this be a public service announcement to power through and do some adulting!!!) (PPS, adulting is hard).
SO WHAT’S THE BIG DIFFERENCE YOU GENIUS AUTO MECHANIC?!? Dieting is calorie cutting and/or exercising which results in fat loss but increases TOXIC DENSITY. Say what? Your body produces fat when there is too much toxicity as a protective measure. So when you lose weight, a smaller body mass = a higher percentage of impurities. Your body over time will go into emergency fat production to protect itself. Cellular cleansing removes toxins from the body. When you detox, all the impurities are released and your body is able to shed stored fat that is no longer needed. Maintaining nutritional balance keeps the body lean. YAY SCIENCE!!!
So now that detoxing the garbage out of your body makes more sense than starving yourself or strapping yourself to a treadmill, here are a few things to consider cutting out or at least indulging in moderation.
- Alcohol. This is the big one and I know you are already mad at me. Sticks and stones baby! Alcohol is basically liquid sugar and it taxes the crap out of your liver. Dial it back a bit. You’ll be doing Rockette high kicks in no time.
- Sugar. (See post on sugar…it is ruining your day!)
- Gluten. I see you rolling your eyes at me!!!! I dare you to cut it out for a week or at least stick to whole wheat breads and grains. White bread has literally no purpose but to be a vessel for other foods. Choose better breads!
- Caffeine. Anyone ever chug coffee and instead of making you feel awake it feels like your eyeballs are gonna fly out of their sockets?!?!?!? Caffeine has a lot of great benefits but look at yourself in the mirror and ask, “Should I feel shame from the insane amount I consume?” Feel the shame. Switch to green tea or water you maniac.
- Dairy. If I were on death row, my last meal would be a wheel of cheese. I’m not here to tell you to take one of the pure joys of life away, but dairy in moderation will do insane wonders for your body.
- Non-organic meats. Look it all up you mad cows! Grass fed meat and wild fish have bazillions more vitamins and minerals. It’s like buying cereal in the bag on the bottom shelf. Splurge for the box!
- Vinegar. This is the most surprising but trust me unless it’s apple cider vinegar, your gut is going into overdrive to deal.
I hope you feel inspired to give your bodies a fresh start for the summer! My rule of thumb is if you can’t read what’s on the label, your body surely will not be able to digest it as well. Go for fresh summer fruits and veggies!
